1. Clearly define the desired lighting power
In a room, the light fixture The first thing you choose is always the ceiling light. It lights up the entire place: that is why it is important to define its power carefully. The ceiling light must provide enough light to see clearly, but not dazzle. The choice of bulbs is also taken into account. For a ceiling light, we recommend economical halogen bulbs or warm white compact fluorescent bulbs.
Several ceiling lights can be added together in a room. In a kitchen, for example, suspensions above a worktop have not only a decorative function, but also a practical one. Their lighting can then intensify and become more directional depending on the height at which they are fixed.
In a bedroom, for an atmosphere more conducive to rest, we will choose lower intensity lights, on the ceiling as well as on the bedside tables. To soften the atmosphere, dark-colored hats or smoked glass bells are ideal. The same goes for the living room, where we can enhance the space with a floor lamp with a softer glow.
2. Choose a ceiling light proportional to your room
When choosing a ceiling light, the dimensions of the room must be taken into account, otherwise the lighting may not be optimal. In fact, the surface area of the room determines the diameter of the ceiling light. As a general rule, it is recommended:
• for less than 10 m², a diameter between 30 and 40 cm;
• between 10 and 15 m², a diameter of 40 to 45 cm;
• between 15 and 20 m², a diameter of 45 to 50 cm;
• beyond 20 m², a diameter of at least 60 cm.
However, these are average values. Depending on the style you want to give to your room, there is nothing to prevent you from choosing a very large ceiling light, above a designer dining table, for example.
In addition, the shape of the room also determines the choice of ceiling light. In a large, fairly long rectangular room, two medium-sized ceiling lights will illuminate the space much better. Conversely, in a small, round room, a single imposing ceiling light will suffice.
3. The right light fixture in the right place
Depending on the function given to the room, its lighting can vary. In a bathroom or kitchen, it must certainly have a decorative function, but above all remain functional. This involves placing lights in key locations, near the mirror above the sink or on the desk where you telework, for example.
In addition, other lighting fixtures can complement the main lighting. A floor lamp near an armchair will serve to create a soft atmosphere for reading or relaxing. In the same way, more discreet lighting, such as table or table lamps, have a soothing and cozy visual aspect, ideal in a bedroom or living room.
